Planning for College Already!

Gahh, I can't believe we are at the end of the road for homeschooling my son. What a journey it has been, and since Kindergarten no less.

He'll be eighteen soon, so he decided to study for and take the GED during his senior year this fall. College tuition is ridiculously expensive, so he'll start off at our community college studying for an A.S. in computer science. I remember working part-time in college and earning enough to cover tuition. Tuition was very inexpensive in the late 1980's.

Other things he'll be working on are getting a driver's license and setting up some volunteer work for job experience. We'll be sharing a car while he goes to college and works.

You are more ahead than we are. Jonathan is not ready for that yet. All our travels have thrown our studies back. One question, why is your son doing the GED? One other thing, I read somewhere that starting out at a community college makes you not eligible for the really good full scholarships at many colleges because they consider you a transfer student. I just thought I would mention this. We also have to work on getting a driver's license here. And we should get braces for him. So much to think about.

I dont think he could get a full scholarship. He doesn't have anything outstanding to qualify him, or specific interests. He's not even certain about his major or what he wants to do for work or a career. He is very much exploring at this point. Computer science seemed like a good starting point for him. He'll decide if he likes it as he takes the classes.

My daughter needs braces. There is always something! Haha.

But why is he doing the GED?

Just to have something official and be done with school. No more paperwork or testing. It will be easier for him to get a student job with a GED here. College admission will be streamlined as well.
