Monthly Grocery Sale Cycle & When to Stockpile

We all know that produce is seasonal and that if you decide to make a huge batch of strawberry preserves the best time of year to do so would be during the summer when strawberries are in season.

A savvy shopper waits until a product is on sale and then buys lots of it to get it at its lowest price! The idea is to create a stockpile that will last you 3-9 months or until the product goes back on sale and can be bought at its lowest price. Packaged foods are seasonal, just like produce. Check out the list below and find out when your favorite foods will more than likely be at their cheapest. Read more here.

August:

Back to school supplies: erasers, pens, crayons, paper, binders, backpacks, notebooks, markers, note cards

Seasonal Produce: Avocados, beans, berries, cherries, corn on the cob, cucumbers, eggplants, figs, seedless grapes, melons, onions, peaches, pears (Bartlett), peppers (sweet bell), plums, summer squash, tomatillos, and tomatoes
Clearance: insect repellent, sunscreen, charcoal, swim suits, gardening supplies and seeds, fans, camping gear

That's interesting. I have always stockpiled - my parents were raised in the Depression and their life lessons for us had a lot to do with that. But for some reason, I've never thought about times of the year for specific items.

Consumer Reports once had a handy chart like this, what goes when on sale and when to make major purchases for the best price. I have to check, if I still have the report!

When reading about the swim suits I thought I should add that the nicer ones are already gone early June and that it is getting very difficult to find the right size when you need one! Many catalogs already offer fall wear when I want to buy swim suits for my children. I find this so annoying!

Hi,

This is a great resource. I don't usually stockpile (we are a family of 4 and I'm always afraid things will spoil) but I do look for sales and bargains.

We don't go crazy with the stockpiling because we are only four as well. I focus on canned goods.

Yesterday I got some great deals on seasoned diced tomatoes at Big Lots. I bought fifteen cans for .60 cents each! They had good deals on jarred tomato sauce - the healthy ones without corn sugars and soy bean oils. I got some gourmet brand for $1.50 a jar. The bread is $1.30, .30 cents more than the dollar store, but it was wheat, which is sold out a lot at our dollar store. I freeze the loaves.
