Old Fashioned Soft Molasses Cookies

Ingredients:
3/4 cup shortening (3/4 cup correct amount)
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup molasses
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon nutmeg

Recipe here.

I substituted 3/4 cup of apple sauce for the shortening, and one tablespoon of canola oil. They were gone quickly! I also added a bit of cardamon. Soft and delicious!

lol, those look delicious, but when I saw this in my inbox my initial thought was my dear friend, who had not let me live down the soft ginger cookie disaster of 2009, when I mistook tablespoons with teaspoons. Imagine this cookie with all the t's transferred to T's! which always begs the question...who is the better friend, the one who I invited over for cookies and coffee and ate them or the other one who showed up late and took one bite, went to my oven and pulled them out and threw them away..saying that because she loved me there is no way that I was going to give these to people that I loved!
Anyway, sorry for babbling:it is a good recipe, looking forward to switching out the shortening for applesauce

Great recipe. I just got some Molasses at Aldi's. It was 1.99 for 12 ounces which works out to 17 cents an ounce. But I just checked the Publix website and they sell a 32oz jug for $4.19 which works out to 13 cents an ounce. Something to consider if you plan to make a lot of these for Christmas.

Thanks for you comments. Yeah, too much molasses can make a bitter cookie. ;) Black strap molasses is really good for your health. I'll be trying this next time, but cutting back on the molasses because it's even more bitter than regular molasses.

Thanks for the discount information. We don't have Aldi's or Publix, but we do have Save-A-Lot, which is similar to Aldi's. I do almost all of my shopping there.
