About Me

My Photo
A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.

Harvesting Early Season Apples

We harvested our lone apple tree yesterday. The apples filled that big green planter pot in front of the ladder.

The apples are rather small, so I boil them whole. Most of them pop open and the outer layer just peels off. With a fork I scrap out the innards. There is a good amount even in a small apple. I was able to make an oatmeal apple crisp last month with just ten of these tart green apples.

With this large amount of apples, I'll be freezing the chunky apple sauce for future use.

I love harvesting our apples! We have many old apple trees that don't produce much most years.(They need to be pruned desperately, but hubby works 11 hour days, and come pruning season, he just doesn't have the time or the energy.) But once in awhile we get a super one and enjoy sauce, pies, crisps and cider! Nothing is better than the taste of something we helped to raise and harvest, is there?
Enjoy your sauce this winter! :~}

Myrnie, I think these are Early Harvest Malus x domestica apples. Lodi apples also mature in July - August.

LF, Thanks! I need to get started cooking these tomorrow. I am hoping to plant more apple trees soon. We have limited space, but I'll finagle in some in a sunny corner.
