About Me

My Photo
A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.

Six Steps to Reducing Water Usage in the Garden

See here.

I like her homemade rain barrel; however, we'd need a closed top system in our area due to mosquitoes. A window screen over the top might work.

There is a product you can buy to get rid of the mosquitos, I think it's just called Mosquito Dunk and it looks like a small donut. It dissolves in the water, it won't kill adult mosquitos but it will kill the larvae. I use it in my rain barrel and it works great. It's harmless to plants that are watered from the rain barrel.

I was wondering about that stuff. i wasn't sure how safe it was around pets and children. I'm also a bit cheap when it comes to the garden, but I'll have to look into this.

I think that the mosquito stuff is probably safe if the dog were to take a tiny drink, but it should say on the package. I use my rain barrel water strictly for watering plants with. I don't remember how much it cost, but it was fairly cheap and came in a package of 6 or so. We got it at the hardware store.
