Making this tonight. Recipe is from a 1820 home making book:
"To Make Yeast in the Turkish Manner:
Take a small teacup-full of split or bruised peas, and pour on it a pint of boiling water, and set it in a vessel all night on the hearth, or any warm place. The next morning the water will have a froth on it, and be good yeast, and will make as much bread as two quartern loaves." ~ The New Family Receipt Book, 1820. Free and in public domain.
About Me
- Alexandra
- A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.

Wow- that's neat! I've never seen yeast from split peas before, just grapes or flour.
I did not know you can do that, I always have dried split peas in the house!!
Amazing.
Have you tried that yet? Did it work? I'd be really interested in hearing if this really works.
Weeel, I left it too long and it turned into something horrible smelling! I'll have to try again. I had put it outside in the heat, had company, and by the time I got to it, it had been out for two days. Way too long for it to sit in the heat.
