Because I won't pass up a bargain, I purchase whole or quartered chicken for around .59 cents a pound at Save-A-Lot. The meat gets boiled off the bone, wrapped into plastic wrap packs(one cup each), and frozen. I use the liquid for stock, and the bones for bone stock. Up until now, I've been scooping off the fat and tossing it, but now I'm going to save it in the back of the frig. for soap making.
From the More-for-Less Cookbook(on sidebar),
Granulated Laundry Soap(makes 13 pounds):
Heat your grease and strain out dark particles.
In a stainless steel pot(do not use glass or aluminum) mix together:
1 can of lye
1 cup pure borax
1 qts. cold water
Slowly add:
4.5 lbs warm melted grease.
Stir with wooden spoon until firm. Using gloves, break up soap into small pieces. Use 1/2 cup to a washer load of clothes. Do not double the recipe. Soap does not need to be dry(aged) to use right away.
I'll review when I try this. I'll probably get the lye from Ace Hardware because I've got a free gift certificate. I already have a box of Borax(K-Mart). This sounds so easy, and an efficient use of resources to make use of every bit of the chicken(except the skin).
Caution: Lye is very caustic and can burn the skin and eyes. I'll be using goggles and gloves.
About Me

- A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.
