I still have some left over reclaimed wood from a table project. I've been planning to use it in the garden. The wood may be treated with insecticides(if made overseas), so I may have to use a liner. Free wood can be found at the end of the aisles in the wood section at places like Home Depot and Lowe's. They'll be standing up in large garbage cans near the wood cutting area. Ask first, but I've never been told I could not have this discarded packing wood. Also, free pallets are a good source of wood, as long as you don't mind taking the time to disassemble them.
Check out this herb carrier. I may make a larger one for veggies. Shade prevents me from having a proper and successful in-ground garden, so I plan to grow the veggies in portables this year. This one above was handcrafted by a couple in the U.K., and is for sale at their site, here.

That's a great tip about wood at the hardware stores- I never thought about it! So many projects just need little pieces :)
Love the herb carrier and I had no idea about the free wood left over from cuttings. I had a friend from school who's family build and entire - nice! - cottage from leftover pallets and cable spools (he worked for the phone company). He said it took them years of hard labour but it was beautiful inside and out.
