I bought a turnip and a large rutabaga last week, and boiled it along with potatoes for a mashed topping on a leftover kale casserole. It was so delicious! I've been missing out by not combining these two root vegetables with the potatoes. It was subtly sweet and greatly enhanced with some real butter, garlic salt, and a little milk.
Rutabaga and turnips are considered superfoods - good for ya'.

We love this too. My kids favourite is to mash rutabaga with carrots.. only partially mash so it's still nice & lumpy. This goes nicely with roast and yorkshire puddings.. hmm, maybe I'll make some this week :)
Yes, we just keep it lumpy - so easy and good! I'll have to try it with carrots next time. Sweet potatoes might be good as well. We had ours with a little sliced Polish sausage.
...you're the THIRD person to declare this to be the best thing ever. I must be doing something wrong- I threw a turnip in with my potatoes last week, and it was inedible. So bitter. Was my turnip too big? I've never eaten a turnip I liked. :(
This is good advice for me. I've never tried it this recipe. It sounds soooo good. I'll try it very soon.
Maybe, but if you add a little sugar or carrot it should sweeten it up. I had much more potato than turnip in mine...maybe use half a turnip?
Myrnie, I found a good link! The smaller turnips are sweeter. I must of gotten lucky because I didn't check for sweet aroma like this link says you should.

That must be it- my sister said they're amazing, but hers were tiny and sweet. Mine was...enormous. The size of a pommelo. OK- I'll try again :)
