About Me

My Photo
A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.

Locks of Love

WHAT IS LOCKS OF LOVE?

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.

Donation guidelines

Hello, short hair. My hair is 12 inches shorter today.

Fantastic! I thought about this a LOT when I was a teen- I had a ribbon in my bathroom that I would measure my ponytail with every few days, to see if it was long enough. In the end I couldn't live with long hair (looks stringy on me!) and cut it off early. My sister did it, though- she has thick, wavy hair. I guess they got a FEW ponytails out of it! Such a great way to help out :)

Every year to year and a half, I chop off hair to send in. I feel like it is not my hair, so I feel bad if I want to style it. So I have to ask God when I should stop feeling this way and enjoy my hair for me. Although, I am pushing 49 and am starting to have a few gray hairs. I know, I'm weird!

It's lovely, and I wouldn't exactly call it 'short'.

If your like me, you could still find a way to make a ponytail out for those hot days!

And now, some little child will have a cute bob of curls!

This is so wonderful. Sadly, I have had many friends and family that have or had cancer. My best friend died of breast cancer at 31. Since her death I have grown my hair to my waist three times and then cut it to over my shoulders so I could donate it to Locks of Love in memory of those now with Our Lord. Eternal Rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them!

Locks of Love is a tremendous organization, I've donated once and my daughter has donated twice. I'm in the process of growing my hair out again so I can donate, but it is going to take me a while. I'm so glad you were able to, and doesn't it feel great?

Annie, I'm so sorry to hear about your friends and family history if cancer. Prayers offered up.

O.M. - Yes, it's nice to be able to do something this easy. Such a simple thing, but it means so much to the recipients.

My hairdresser collects for something similar. I thought it was Locks of Love but she told me recently it was something different. I've donated about 4-5 times now. They take shorter lengths - I think 5 inches is the least. I'm in the process of growing my hair back out & will donate again. I have an uncle & cousin with alopecia. He now shaves his head bald but he started loosing hair young & I know she wears a wig of some type.

You are such a nice person. I bet your hair will make a pretty hair piece too!

Wonderful cause, wonderful gift. I have neighbors who did this. Alas, my hair is short. Very admiring of your gift. God bless!
