Natural sunscreens minus some of the controversial chemicals are expensive. California Baby SPF 30 is around $17.00. I've extended these sunscreens by emptying them into a pump bottle and adding just a little oil. I added almond oil with lemon grass essential oils, doubles as a insect repellent. I noticed that it spreads better, and did not leave a white film. Some of the safer natural sunscreens tend to leave a white film and do not spread well over the skin.
I don't know if this affects the SPF, but they are still working for us.
I might even try this with zinc oxide, and make my own sunscreen by mixing it with oil. Sesame seed oil and Shea butter reportedly have some natural sunscreen protection. That's a topic for another post...more projects, fun. :)
And here's an Etsy mechant who makes her own natural sunscreen with zinc oxide(pictured above). Not a bad deal for 8 ounces, only $12.00 with free shipping. This I'd be willing to try.
