We've been having a terrible problem with ticks, and despite all our preventative measures they still nested around the yard. There are some pretty strong chemicals at our larger home and gardens centers, and I didn't want to use these with our pets and children. So I took a trip to Ace Hardware and found Safer Bug Control made with pyrethrins(chrysanthemums). It kills over 40 different kind of bugs(including fleas), so it also knocked out our ant problem around the base of the house. Ace Hardware carries Ace brand pyrethrins for the garden, a bit less expensive.
So far so good, no more ticks! You do have to wait about 2 hours before letting pets or people onto the lawn, but as soon as it dries, it's safe.

pyrethryn is good, isn't it?
We have a tree/shrub which is being eaten by caterpillars atm and I need to get something before every single leaf is destroyed. A good reminder to try pyrethrin first.
Ticks give me the creeps! Glad you got them under control. Reminds me that I need to check my head! Once when I was working in the yard a lot, my hair dresser found one behind my ear! Yikes! One of those memories I try to forget!
We are having a problem with slugs. I need to have a slug massacre!
One of the girls at my dh office found that "Dawn" dish detergent was good at removing fleas from little animals. (She has A Yorktese, tiny little doggy. But she doused it with conditioner to keep the coat soft.)
Ticks creep me out as well! My daughter had one on her scalp last week. Shivers. At least they are not deer tick. We've got Lone Star ticks.
Lola, that Dawn, the original one without bleach is good! I use this as well to clean the dog, but the pets also get the monthly drops - Frontline Plus. Our dog gets bathed once a month, and he must have greasy skin because the Dawn does not dry him out at all. I only use it in the hot months.
Cool! WE're having a problem with ticks this year and yellow jackets. I like your tip. WE'll be trying it!
