About Me

My Photo
A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.

Make Your Own Waterless Hand Sanitizer

This is really simple and uses easily found ingredients. Simply purchase a bottle of aloe vera and cut it with alcohol and a little glycerin. You can even scent it with essential oils. I eyeball the measurements for the hand sanitizer ingredients to get it to the right consistency, but *here is a more exacting recipe.

You'll end up with quite a bit. I funnel mine into a mini reusable travel size pump bottle from the dollar store. This fits nicely into my bag. If you don't have a funnel, the dollar stores usually carry these in sets of three.

*An alert reader noticed that the linked recipe was low on alcohol. In order for this sanitizer to be effective in killing most of those nasty germs, the solution must be at least 60% alcohol. So please take this into consideration when using the linked recipe. I make mine with about 50% alcohol. Use at your own discretion.

Thank you so much for that! I love hand sanitizer and essential oils!

In order to be effective, hand sanitizer has to have more than 60% alcohol, so please don't use this thinking you are sanitizing your hands! If you enjoy it as a cooling lotion, go for it.

Would you name your source for the percentage effectiveness of the alcohol, or provide more information? I'd like to link to it. Thanks.

Nevermind, found it, thanks! I think mine is about 50% alcohol.
