About Me
- Alexandra
- A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.

Thanks for sharing that. I couldn't agree more but then we DO live close to family - just across the driveway. I love it.
I enjoyed the article/comments but will always encourage my children to travel to their heart's content. As much as I long for more family involvement in my life, I met my husband through travel and as a result, we have a beautiful, multicultural family of our own. Life is full of hard choices, to be sure, but if a young person's heart is to see the world I support this 100% even if it means that they may choose to live overseas. I believe that it could be part of their destiny, their calling, and why would I want to prevent them from becoming who they are meant to be?
Yep, once their grown they are living their own lives, and I would want mine to be happy living out their lives using their gifts first and foremost.
I was raised overseas(not military) and did a lot of traveling, so I can appreciate the benefits of experiencing different cultures. If I won the lottery, the first thing we'd do is go overseas traveling for a year! In fact in two years we'll have the money to travel, and I plan to take the children to Paris and London, then down to Latin America.
Good food for thought though - the "idea" of living close to pool resources of extended family, even if it's not practical or good for all. After all, some people don't necessarily want to be close to family(dysfunctional)!;)
It's an almost old fashioned concept these days in our highly transient world(U.S.), but it's a choice that might make sense economically, strictly speaking and not taking anything else into consideration.
