About Me

My Photo
A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.

Grass Fed Beef

My husband surprised me a few days ago with 37.5 pounds of grass feed beef. A coworker in his department has an organic farm, and the price was very good, at $3.25(averaged) per pound. Grass fed beef cooks at lower temperatures and does need a little tenderizing before it is cooked. I marinated a few steaks in raspberry vinegar and spices overnight, and they cooked up like butter! I was expecting it to be a bit tougher.

Some paper work with the beef indicated that grass fed beef has more Omega 3 and Omega 6 EFAs(like fish), and higher amounts of a cancer fighting linoleic acid than commercial beef. It is also free of hormones and antibiotics.

I've asked my husband to get chicken, eggs, vegetables, and possibly milk from this farm. It's very far for us to drive, but his coworker can deliver to my husband's employment. I'm even considering purchasing some laying chickens, but we need to check with our city codes first.

How blessed you are! One of the beautiful things I have discovered since we moved out of the city is meeting so many small farmers who are more than willing to sell us what they grow and raise. It's wonderful to know that we are supporting famers whom we know personally as well as knowing where our food comes from. We are working on finding someone to provide us with beef as you have been provided for.

Your blog has been a blessing to me. Thanks for sharing!
