About Me

My Photo
A homeschooling mother of one teenager and a little. In 2001, I resigned from my 13 year position as a case manager to homeschool my oldest who was a preschooler at the time, and later a daughter who came along in 2005. This is by far the hardest job I've ever loved. My husband of nearly 20 years supports us as a fire fighter and EMT.

Homemade Congestion Bath Salts

I've made bath salts in the past, so all I had to do was tweak this recipe to include eucalyptus. This is a very simple recipe.

Ingredients:
  • Epsom salt
  • Sea salt
  • Baking soda
  • Eucalyptus oil(as much as needed - smell test), or a bit of Vick's chest rub(or generic)
  • Oil, any

I didn't have the eucalyptus oil, so I used the last bit of Vick's ointment, about 1/3 of a small jar and mixed it with about a cup of canola oil. I warmed this in the microwave for about 20 seconds to make it easier to blend. Next I poured this over about two cups of Epsom salts in a bowl, and added equal amounts salt and baking soda until it was thick and not so wet.

This mixture gets spread thinly on a cookie sheet and heated on warm in the oven until brittle and fairly dry, about one hour. Break off pieces and crumble into a pretty jar with a lid.

Options:
  • Add red food coloring to the oil for pink salts.
  • Add a little tea tree oil or rosemary or peppermint oil
  • Use Avon's Skin So Soft as your oil

Warning: be careful not to heat any of these oils too much, just warm them. They could splash on you and burn. It also makes the bath tub a wee bit slippery(careful getting in and out of the tub), but rinses well.
