We've been homeschooling and living on one income since 2001. This is a second career for me; I got started having children in my 30's, and quit a 13 year career as a case manager to homeschool and be a full-time mom. It's the hardest job you'll ever love. I have three children, one of whom is a saint in heaven. My beloved husband of 15 years is a professional fire fighter, and part-time homeschool teacher.

Shade Gardening Plant Choices

I just ordered some more of these very hardy Christmas or Lenten roses(Helleborus niger) from ebay. They do great in our shade garden in raised beds. This picture is of a Christmas rose plant which I divided last season. It came back beautifully despite the drought last summer. I don't think they are used enough in gardens, and I'm not sure why because they never disappoint. Mine bloom in zone 7(almost 8) from late winter all the way through the next frost. The colors of the blooms change throughout the year. Last year they were light green to cream, this year pink! It's also the flower of Saint Agnes.

The Legend of the Christmas Rose

Home Depot had some good deals on day lilies and gladiolus. I planted about fifty bulbs today, so I'm hoping for a lot more color in my shade garden. Those orange old fashioned day lilies AKA: ditch lilies and iris do very well under all our tall oak trees. Both are another good choice for shade gardens with partial sunlight.
